I had a first-gen ATV that just died so I bought a new one. It does rock for all the reasons you mention (also you can hijack other people's who have unsecured WiFi networks, which amuses me...imagine people in other apartments wondering why their TV suddenly plays someone else's music---but I digress), but it's important to note that if you don't have a receiver and entire entertainment system, the two ATVs are irritatingly different because of the audio options (optical only for the new ATV). The first-gen one had an RCA option. For those of us with just a TV and some speakers, that means music can be played through the new ATV only if the TV is on, and that effectively removes its utility as an Airport Express--ish replacement. I bet iCafe could make an extra $75 with a lot of Apple TV sales by stocking optical-to-RCA converter boxes. Just saying...

Thanks Brian Best of BestMacs, for pointing out that "Under DMCA, you have the right to convert CD to MP3. But if you rip your CDs and then sell them, you'd have to delete the MP3 to stay legal. The ownership is based on the original media." We certainly don't want to break any laws! I would extrapolate to say that DVDs probably have a similar governing law. Word to the wise....thanks again Brian!
